Jail Facility Overview in Licking County

The primary correctional facility serving Licking County is the Licking County Justice Center, a medium-security detention facility. The facility operates under the management of the Licking County Sheriff’s Office and is the county’s sole general-population detention center. The Justice Center holds both male and female adult offenders and accommodates approximately 250 to 302 inmates. It primarily houses individuals who are awaiting trial or sentencing, as well as those serving sentences of two years or less.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Licking County Sheriff’s Office, the Newark Police Department, the U.S. Marshal’s Service, and various surrounding municipal police departments, bring their arrestees to the Justice Center, as many smaller jurisdictions in the county do not operate independent lock-up facilities. The Licking County Justice Center offers a range of rehabilitative and support programs for inmates. These include a GED educational program, vocational training, addiction and substance abuse services, mental health counseling, and religious programming.

A mental health unit staffed by a counselor and nurse is maintained within the facility. Inmates receive a physical and mental health assessment within 14 days of incarceration. Medical, dental, and mental health services are available to all inmates regardless of their ability to pay. A dentist is present on-site every two weeks, and a psychiatrist visits weekly.

Inmate Search by Jail Facility

Licking County Justice Center has a public roster or Inmate List which can be accessed online. There’s also a minimum-security facility at the same address, which houses lower-risk inmates, and the Licking County Juvenile Detention Center, though juvenile records are held to a higher confidentiality standard under Ohio law and are not publicly searchable. For those serving state-supervised sentences, the Licking/Muskingum Community Correction Center operates as a state-jurisdiction minimum-security facility, with inmates searchable through Ohio’s Department of Rehabilitation and Correction offender database. Each facility serves a different population, so it’s worth knowing which one to check.

Inmates housed at the Licking County Justice Center may receive personal mail from friends and family. All incoming mail is processed through a third-party mail management service, Smart Communications. Personal mail should not be sent directly to the facility address. All incoming and outgoing mail is subject to inspection for contraband. The envelope must include the sender’s full name and return address. Legal mail from an attorney or court must be clearly marked as Legal Mail on the outside of the envelope and is opened in the presence of the inmate.
